A great grandmother of two deaf footballers in the Peterborough has donated all the presents from her 90th birthday party towards youth deaf football and raised £500.

Mrs Barber, great nan of Aaron and Ava Osker, both players for Peterborough United’s deaf youth team, asked all her friends and relatives to write cheques to the local deaf children’s society that runs the deaf football project in the city, rather than buy her gifts.

The football scheme is run by the Peterborough and District Deaf Children’s Society in association with Peterborough United.

Peterborough’s deaf football coaching is thought to be the only one in England that provides qualified and accessible coaching for deaf children and adults from the age of 5 all the way to adulthood. The sessions take place every Monday – see here for more information.

The money will be used to help pay for team transport and provide training kits and equipment to the youth team. Andy Palmer, co-ordinator of the deaf football project said, “We can’t thank Mrs Barber enough for this act of such generosity. We’ll put the money to good use, have the kids looking smart and ensure that they all get to the national championships again in March. Thank you Mrs Barber”
